Great Bedroom Decor
The bedroom is the place where you spend a great deal of time every day, albeit much of it asleep. This, of course, means that it needs to be a place of relaxation, and for many people, romance.
It’s all to easy to let the clutter of everyday life invade your bedroom, but this impairs your ability to relax in the one room in the house that should be designed for that purpose. It’s time to decorate your bedroom for its true purpose.
Start out by thinking about your personal style. What would you like to have in your bedroom? What would make it relaxing, romantic or both? If you’re married, what would appeal to your spouse?
Let’s start with the bed. As the largest piece of furniture in most rooms, as well as the most used, it is something of a focal point. Do you like the bedding? What about the bedframe itself?
Sometimes you will quickly realize that it is time to replace all your bedroom furniture when you decide to redecorate your bedroom. Maybe the old furniture just isn’t your style anymore. With today’s online shopping available, finding new furniture doesn’t have to mean running all around town anymore. You can shop from the comfort of your own home and often get better prices.
Back to the bed. What would you like it to look like? Huge, 4 poster beds are quite popular right now, but would it look right in your home? If your room is big enough, it might look perfect. In a smaller room it will just make it look crowded.
Once you have chosen your bed, pick the rest of your furniture to match, but not overcrowd your bedroom. The dressers need to have adequate space for the clothing you will store in them. Most bedroom sets have plenty of matching pieces to choose from, so that you can find a style you like, yet still have a choice of a couple different sizes for your dresser.
Now it’s time to pick the accents. Your bedding is one kind of accent for your room. What colors do you like? Do you love throw pillows or are they a nuisance? Of course, soft sheets and good pillows are a must, both for relaxation and romance.
Lighting matters too. You don’t need to light your bedroom up as brightly as the rest of the house all of the time… in fact, there are many times when dimmer lighting is perfect for the mood in the bedroom. Consider installing a dimmer switch on the main light or have dimmer lights as a part of your decor.
Another option for mood lighting is candles. They can add a lovely touch to the decor, and when it’s time for romance they’re just about classic. Scented candles can add a lot too.
One item I strongly recommend leaving out of the bedroom that has found its way into too many is the television. Putting a television in your bedroom limits your ability to relax, and it takes away from romance. Yes, you can enjoy relaxing in front of the television in the evening, but why not do that in the living room, and leave the bedroom for other forms of relaxation?

Getting The Most Out Of Your Closet Space
For many of us, storage space within the home seems to be at a premium most of the time. Although the majority of homes include a large number of closets, they always seem to be full. The truth is, most home owners only use about one-third to two-thirds of their closet space. Because closets are designed vertically, there remains a lot of room even in closets that seem the most crowded as there is a lot of the area that contains only air. Depending on the location of the closet, there are many ways that you can maximize the storage capacities of your household closets.
Bedroom closets are the first type of closet that comes to mind. Bedroom closets usually contain most of our clothes. Clothes are a major space taker in a closet, but they can be reduced so that your closet has more capacity. One way to add to the space for storage within your closet is to use or add additional shelves. Most bedroom closets will include a shelf at the top that can be useful for storing boxes and other smaller items such as underwear and socks. There are many accessories available that can add to your storage capacity as well. Closet organizer hang vertically but contain several vertical compartments that are useful for storing clothing items that can be folded such as pants and T-shirts. You can also buy apparatus that hangs from the main bar in your closet, and is essentially a second bar. This is used to hang more clothing on. The idea of both of these pieces of equipment is to fully utilize the vertical space in your closet.
Other closets in your house are probably used for a variety of storage purposes, for games, books, food, and seasonal clothing. All of these shelves are useful in that they are ready for additional shelving to be incorporated, giving them some extra capacity. There are several different types of shelves for this purpose. One is the bracket shelving style. This type of shelf is easily adjustable due to the many slots on the mount into which the metal bracket is placed. The flexibility offered by these shelves is great, but they tend to be unreliable in terms of stability, and you may find yourself knocking the shelves themselves over gain and again. A more complex process in terms of installation, but a much more reliable model when it comes to stability, are installed wooden shelves with ledges. These shelves have to be measured carefully on installation, or they will be useless to you. The mounts are merely ledges nailed into the wall, the shelves sized planks that fit on top of the ledges. The whole project requires some attention to detail, and you lose the flexibility offered by bracket shelves, but they are a much more stable model.
There are a few ways to maximize the closet space in your home, depending on the use of the closet and the degree of stability and effort you want to put into it. Wooden shelves on mounts are the best way to go for a closet that needs stability, such as a pantry or game shelf, while mount and bracket styles are best for closet with goods of variable sizes that are prone to reorganization.

Fitted Bedrooms & Replacement Kitchen And Bedroom Doors
So, you’re thinking of purchasing a new fitted bedroom. The possibilities are endless but you don’t know what to do or where to go. You really need to know your options and how much will it cost etc. Hopefully this article written by an ex bedroom fitter will help you through this decision.
Everything really depends on your budget. Basically there are two forms of bedroom installation, these are free standing / kit furniture and fully fitted.
Freestanding & Kit form bedroom furniture is usually made up of various components that makeup a box with matching doors and accessories. This is usually fastened to your wall for support. This form of furniture is relatively cheap and can be purchased from companies such as Ikea, MFI and others. Most companies now days offer rather interesting designs. Sometimes these purchases prove an easier option with headaches and cost. However you’ll need to be rather handy with a tool kit in order to assemble it if it’s supplied in kit form. This type of furniture is usually manufactured in severe volume and quality tends to be average with a short life span on product wear.
A fully fitted bedroom falls into a different category completely. A fully fitted wardrobe is a product which is purposefully built for your bedroom and installed to suit your walls and ceiling. In a nutshell you’ll either have to rip the old one or replace the existing doors and accessories using a replacement kitchen and bedroom door company. Thus providing your bedroom with a complete facelift. This option is usually the cheapest and should costs around £500 – £1000 dependant on which products you choose and quantity.
Beware as ripping out a fully fitted bedroom (especially old Victorian timber wardrobes) can leave a terrible mess and lots of holes. Only trained fitters should attempt this. Otherwise your costs will spiral more than you think. Holes in walls equal’s plasterers and builders and these guys aren’t cheap and take time to convince to do your job as they are usually very busy on large jobs.
Cost wise a new fitted bedroom starts at around £1500 for a budget priced wardrobe. This will increase dependant on the finish and material you choose. Solid timber remains the most expensive, whereas melamine faced chipboard and vinyl wrapped doors tend to be the norm for most fitted bedroom companies. Costs increase greatly if French polish or solid timber finishes are chosen. Polished furniture products and timber products cost more due to the expense of purchasing raw timber and the length of time it takes to manufacture. It’s like comparing a new mini to a Bentley. Melamine faced chipboard and vinyl wrapped kitchen and bedroom doors seem the most popular products used in the UK.
Now you need to know what construction suits you. The makeup of a fitted bedroom is usually very similar whoever you purchase this from. Usually it’s either a front frame face fixed system or a box system / slim frame system. A front frame face fixed system is always fastened from the floor to the ceiling unless specified. A fitter will assemble a frame which is fastened and scribed to suit your usually bumpy walls and ceiling. Basically battens are fastened to the back wall and floor to take the weight of the top shelf and floor. Fascias and end panels are then cut and scribed and fixed to your frame. Finally doors are fitted using fittings such as Blum hinges. Be warned as you’ll need to ask for backs as you usually don’t get them with this method. Sharps bedrooms have used this system for many years to much success. It’s a slightly time consuming process as a fitter has to tailor the wardrobe specifically to your bedroom. These fitters are usually very highly trained.
A box system and slim frame system usually consists of a group of boxes pre made in the workshop and delivered to site for assembly. The fitters usually level these boxes onto a ready made plinth. All boxes are then screwed together quickly with side gaps being filled with scribed in-fill pieces to cover any gaps. This is a popular method due to the fact that most items have been assembled in the workshop. This assembly method varies from company to company. This is usually the fastest method of installation.
If you decide to have a home visit from a bedroom company then make sure you ask the right questions of the furniture designer. Ask if its possible to visit a recent installation as this would provide you with an idea of their quality, ask how long the installation will take as sometimes jobs go on forever, ask if you can visit their workshop – don’t just go off their showroom as showrooms are always made to impress, ask how many jobs they install a week as you really want to deal with somebody that’s specializes in fitted bedrooms. Ask what system they use and whether it has backs in. Be prepared!
Usually a reputable company will answer these questions without hesitation. When you make the appointment ask how long the sales person will be in your house. If it’s going to be a hard sell then they’ll prompt that the husband and the wife must both be present on the night. This should ring alarms bells as this methods shows that this visit will result in a real hard sell and they want you to sign on the night. Most reputable fitted bedroom companies prefer to sell on the night but don’t usually use hard tactics. Most will give you ample time to decide. Tradesmen don’t like to give too much sales patter and usually prefer to get on with the job at hand.
Ask if they use sub contractors for their installations. If they do be very wary. Most good companies employ their own fitters. These fitters are usually known as subbies. It’s sad to say that a fair majority of subbies have no training or experience and usually bumble through a job leaving terrible problem behind. If you’ve paid a subbie upfront then you’ll usually struggle to get them back to sort out problems that may have arisen.
Usually a reputable company will ask for a small deposit and settlement on completion based upon the installation team satisfying your needs.

Feng Shui Colors for the Bedroom
Feng Shui is about balance and harmony in our environments. The bedroom is a very important room (we spend the majority of our day there), so many people naturally ask how to improve their bedroom using color selection according to Feng Shui. As we discuss bedroom colors, it is also imperative to recognize the importance of the other rooms in your house. Enhancing your bedroom without enhancing the other beneficial areas of your home does not provide you with the full benefits of Feng Shui. Feng Shui is about balancing the energy in your complete and total environment.
With that said, here are some Feng Shui tips to consider for your bedroom…
Don’t overdo the bright colors in your bedroom. Bright colors are alive and moving, so the more bright colors that are used, the harder it will be to stay asleep. This also applies to plants and especially water. Plants and water manifest yang energy, and cause the same issues in the bedroom as bright colors. The colors associated with plants and water are green, black, and blue. Bright colors to avoid are reds, strong oranges or bright yellows. Florescent colors are out of the question!
Pictures of moving water can also cause problems. If you’ve got a picture of a waterfall, river, or ocean in your bedroom, it’s a wise idea to move it. Unfortunately, aquariums in the bedroom can also cause sleeping issues and should be moved. Although you should avoid red in the bedroom, a little touch of red can spice up your sex life! (Red is fire, so lit candles count as red.)
Dark colors (shades of brown) should be used in the décor of the bedroom, but not on the walls. Painting the bedroom walls a dark color might help you sleep, but won’t help you feel rejuvenated in the morning. Darker colored décor should be used to the point of tilting the room’s ambiance yin, without making you feel like you’re party to a funeral. You don’t have to just use browns, pick darker colors and designs that are relaxing for you.
If you’re room is already very dark (wood paneled, for example) and you can’t make changes to it, you might want to consider changing any “yellow light” producing light bulbs to brighter, whiter bulbs. Opening the blinds during the day will also dramatically improve the rooms feeling. If it’s dark at night, balance it with brightness during the day. (Clearing any room occasionally by opening all the blinds is extremely beneficial.)
In painting the bedroom, using pastel colors is your best bet. The best colors to use depend on the compass direction of the room’s location. To determine the compass direction of your home, draw your house’s outline on a piece of paper, and split the home into 9 equal sections (3 down, 3 across). Use a compass to find which direction is north, and label each box according to that compass direction (North can be in a corner). Here are the color combinations:
- NE, Center, or SW: Rooms located here should be painted pastel earthy colors, including light shade of yellow.
- NW or W: Rooms located here benefit from metal, so use a shade of white.
- SE or E: The SE and East benefit from the color green, but you may want to only use these colors if the room will be used as a study. Then a shade of green would be perfect. Otherwise, use pastel earthy colors including shades of yellow. White is not helpful here, as it destroys the productive properties of the SE and East. These directions are associated with wealth.
- S: The South benefits from red. If you want to use red here, use it sparingly as too much will cause restlessness in bed. Use shades of white for the walls.
- N: The north benefits from blue and black (water). Since you can’t use water, try white instead, as white (metal) will help with the benefits of water without using water.
I know this might be a letdown, as some of you reading this were hoping to hear painting a room florescent orange would make you an international movie star overnight! But Feng Shui is about balance and harmony, so using light, pastel colors is your best bet when painting the walls.
There are some other critical Feng Shui tips that you should be aware of, including determining which compass directions will bring you the most luck – and which ones you should avoid at all costs. Visit www.FengShuiByTroy.com to learn more.

Decorating your kids rooms with colors
Are you looking for new ideas to decorate your kid’s room? Give the room some longevity by choosing background elements that are long lasting. Then use accessories, bedding, and inexpensive area rugs to create easily changeable themes. Unlike the other rooms in your home, which mostly reflect your personality, decorating kids rooms requires a slightly different approach.
Whether you’re a first-time parent or a veteran, decorating kid’s rooms is not child’s play. It’s a quite complex process where an adult has to incorporate all the safety features and blend them with childlike fantasy.
The room should be an expression of the child’s identity, not yours. But children change, so you need to think ahead: will the design be easy to modify in five years, or even two? Is there room for storage, study, animal or doll collections, or a wrestling match?
First, consult with the child. Be certain to consider the child’s likes and dislikes when decorating their space. Decorating kids rooms is a work in progress – the planning begins before they are even born and goes on throughout their childhood.
You can be as creative and over the top as your child lets you; Vibrant and playful colors work well in any child’s room. Always paint children’s bedrooms with a semi-gloss, so the walls are easy to wipe without being too shiny. As for storage, check out your local do-it-your-self center for a host of affordable solutions.
As children grow, learn, play, and explore, their environment should respond. Kids will enjoy the exciting makeovers because they highlight their favorite interests at every age. As your child gets older, ask for their input.

Decorating Ideas For Kids Rooms
Kids room decorating are an opportunity waiting to come to life! No where else can you mix and match a variety of paint schemes along with creative stencils, stickers, sparkles and get away with it. Best of all, your kids can be involved in transforming their room into their own accomplishments while redecorating at the same time.
Some creative ideas on decorating kid’s bedrooms:
Furniture – Make a whole play area from an ordinary bookcase. Choose bright colors that match your child style and add features such as cutout doors for a doll house or castle effect. Add texture materials to one or two compartments that create a window or door like feature. When your child has out-grown the design, you can easily remove the materials and doors and replace them with the original materials that you saved. Other ideas can be used with Lego or large building blocks to create more designs to match your child’s age.
Walls – Turn your kid’s walls in a big canvas. Paint is the perfect solution and least expensive way to create a kaleidoscope impact while offering unlimited color options. Just changing one wall or adding stripes, borders, sponge or stamping techniques can bring new life to an ordinary room. Use wavy or splat design patterns, or turn one wall into a mural effect. Choose a bright base and pick accent colors to achieve the best effects.
Ceiling – Create a magical night sky on your child’s ceiling with glow in the dark decorations. These can be fun and even comforting for your child to be able to lie in bed and gaze up at the night stars
Doors – Use wooden letters that spell your child’s name and glue them on the door. Painting them in the theme color of your child room will dress up the door nicely. Closet door hardware can be replaced with wiggly handles or their favorite cartoon character. By matching the door hardware with wall plates you can carry the pattern through out the room that accents their style.
Shelves – Using shelving materials can be the least expensive way to pick up the clutter and organize a room. Painting with the same colors or add design features with stencil or stamping can quickly dress up any room. Different shelve designs can also be used to border a window that eliminate the need for expensive window treatments.
Accessories – Large cork boards can quickly turn a bare wall into a busy space. Cork boards also eliminate holes in walls from nails or tacks that later need to be repaired. Wooden picture frames can be painted to help accent the room. Fans blades can be reversed and painted with designs to add cool effects when in use and then can be reversed when it comes time to re-decorate.
Decorating your kid’s bedroom is a great way to give them a place they can call their own and you may just find your kid spending more time in there!

Create a Green Baby Nursery
In our attempt to revert back to a Green lifestyle, it’s only fitting to use Green principles when designing a baby’s room. After all, a newborn will spend an average of 17 hours a day in their nursery, and it should be an environment filtered from toxins.
Here are some of the key points to consider when setting up a Green baby nursery.
Paint: Use one of the new water-based, low-volatile organic compound paints and take your friends or family up on their request to help. If you’re pregnant, you shouldn’t be doing the painting. Try and complete the paint job at least a month before baby arrives to give it time to cure.
Flooring: Carpets are nice and soft for babies to crawl on, but they can harbor toxic material and bacteria. VOC’s can be found in the fibers, backing and glue as well as any stain resistant treatments that may have been applied. If you must go that route, choose an all-natural, biodegradable carpet made from wool fibers and no toxic adhesives. A better choice is a solid floor such as linoleum, cork or wood. Use natural fiber throw rugs with a non slip backing.
Crib: Choose real wood with natural finishes since the press wood versions can emit formaldehyde. The bedding should be an organic untreated material made from cotton or wool.
Window Coverings: Aluminum mini-blinds or wooden shutters are easy to keep clean and do a great job of adjusting the light levels.
Toys: Most toys are made of plastic, which is a major contributor to indoor air pollution. Try to purchase natural cloth or wood toys wherever possible.
Airflow: Make certain there is adequate ventilation in the nursery that allows for fresh air, but no drafts. An Air filter is also very effective, but use one that has both a HEPA filter and activated military carbon cloth. Change your furnace filters every three months to reduce dust and pollen.
Cleaning: Use 100 percent biodegradable nontoxic cleaning products.

Choose A Theme With Baby Room Decorating Ideas
These days, the number of baby room decorating ideas are practically limitless due to the many different items available to expecting parents. Therefore, decorating a baby room has more to do with narrowing down your options than coming up with them in the first place. Among the best ways to come up with the right baby room ideas for decorating is to begin with a theme, and then expand from there.
To choose a theme for baby room decorating, start by brainstorming those ideas for decorating baby room that you find most pleasing. Remember that you’ll want it to be something that your baby will find enjoying to first learn and recognize. It should be interesting and fun to look at for the baby, to provide the right amount of stimulation.
Decorating a baby room can be as simple as choosing a teddy bear theme and then going from there. For example, your steps for the teddy bear theme when decorating a baby room may be as follows:
* Furniture – among the most appealing baby room furniture is that made out of solid wood because of its classic elegance and reliable quality. The furniture may include a crib, dresser, changing table, and rocking chair, depending on your budget and the amount of space you have in the nursery.
* Walls – baby room decorating with teddy bears can mean the standard classic brown bears, or bears of different colors. You can either stencil them, paint a mural, or add some wallpaper.
* Floors – many people don’t even think about the floors as a part of decorating a baby room. However, the floors really do finish the look, with hardwood, soft carpeting, or pleasant throw rugs.
* Bedding – it is extremely simple to find adorable teddy bear baby room decorating ideas for bedding. There will be ample sets to choose from in every store you visit. Just make sure that they are of good quality, are machine washable (and dryable), hypoallergenic, and, of course, are very soft.
Besides that, all you need to finish your baby room decorating is a teddy bear!

Bedroom Furniture
If you are looking for a way to update your bedroom and improve your comfort, new bedroom furniture will do both in style. New bedroom furniture allows you to reinvent your space, making it truly your own personal retreat.
Types of Bedroom Furniture
Sometimes called a bedroom set or bedroom suite, bedroom furniture almost always describes beds, wardrobes/armoires, chests and dressers, nightstands, vanities, trunks, and various types of mirrors.
Styles of Bedroom Furniture
Most styles of new bedroom furniture can be described as Traditional, Arts & Crafts/Craftsman style, Modern, Transitional, or Casual.
Traditional Bedroom Furniture: Also known as Classic, the traditional look is often comforting in its familiarity. Crafted of hardwood and often well made and sturdy, traditional furniture ends to be more embellished and ornamented than other furniture styles.
Arts & Crafts/Craftsman Style Bedroom Furniture: This style utilizes clean lines and straight-forward design. No ornamentation, no embellishments, just natural wood and hardware. The emphasis here is on vertical and elongated forms, natural style and simple, refined craftsmanship.
Modern Bedroom Furniture: Sleek, sophisticated, and totally contemporary, the term Modern Furniture describes a style of home furniture that often uses the latest materials in familiar ways, and more established materials in totally new designs. Instead of the clunky and massive wooden beds of the past, steel and metal alloys take bedroom furniture into the 21st Century. Moulded plywood and plastics are seen alongside woods in the most contemporary bedroom sets, adding lightness and a hint of playful joie de vivre.
Transitional Bedroom Furniture: The term “Transitional Style” describes a type of furniture that blends Traditional and Modern. Often more sleek and refined than Traditional, Transitional Furniture is not as daring as pieces from the Modern Movement.
Casual Bedroom Furniture: Casual bedroom furniture simply describes a style that is very laid back and comfortable. Overstuffed and ultra comfy, “casual” describes a lifestyle as much as a type of bedroom set.
Your bedroom furniture should be a reflection of you. Choose what you are drawn to and turn your bedroom into your very own sanctuary.
